VARITATIONS ON A THEME
This collection began as an idea I’d had of a group of unusual characters in a seedy nicotine stained lounge bar, the type you see in old films.
This initial concept led me to use the soft orange light I shot the collection in, this colour pallet came with the added benefit of giving the images a warmth and shine which allowed me to push the hair ideas as far as I could. I was interested in taking haircuts and hairdressings that shouldn’t work together, that are complete opposites and finding a way to make them fit.
This I hoped would give images the feeling of newness but nostalgia at the same time, like the idea was always there but that I hadn’t seen something like it before either. The decision to shoot the collection myself came from me wanting to have the time to push the ideas as far as I could, adding layers to each shot that would only be noticed at the second or third look.
Shooting over multiple days removed the pressures of time and budgets giving me time to take the work to extremes, bringing the characters I had in mind to life.
